It happens. From frozen taps to burst pipes, we’ve all had a plumbing disaster when we least expect it.
Though many people head straight into panic mode in search of the nearest plumber, there are a number of things you can do to ease the situation before we get there.
Keep calm. What seems to be the problem?
My Taps Are Frozen!
If your taps are frozen, open your bathroom cupboard doors and kitchen cabinets open to allow more heat to get to your pipes.
I Have A Burst Pipe!
If you suffer a burst pipe, immediately turn off the water at your main shut-off valve (stop cock) Make sure you know where this is in advance (go and look for it now before you carry on reading!) If you have a gas water heater, turn the switch to the “pilot” position.
I Have A Cracked Pipe!
For a cracked pipe, use duct tape to pull together the crack as a temporary solution whilst you wait for us to get there.
My Drains Are Clogged!
For clogged drains, you can attempt to clear the clog yourself with a plunger. Use straight, smooth up-and-down motions to dislodge clogs.
If your drain is completely clogged, don’t pour anything down there. Try the plunging method, and if that doesn’t work, give us a call.
If the drains are so backed up that water is pouring back out onto the floor… call us immediately. This can be a sign of a major disaster in the works, such as a sewage backup.
I Can Smell Gas!
The Toilet Is Overflowing!
If the water is approaching overflow, turn on the cold water in the nearby sink or bathtub. This can slow the water flow enough to prevent it from spilling over.
The water shut off, look for the shut off valve behind the toilet. Turn it clockwise.
Give us a call. We’ll come and take a look.
A WORD ON PLUMBING PRIDE
We know that some of our customers don’t like to call for fear of asking silly questions or reporting small problems.
Lose the pride! If you think something is wrong, we’ll check it out. You may just save yourself from a larger issue further down the line.
OTHER PLUMBING TIPS YOU MIGHT FIND HANDY…
When that new appliance lands on your doorstep, there’s a lot more involved than ripping off the wrapping and plugging it in. Appliance installations are trickier than they look.
We’ve put together an outline of plumbing terms, and what they actually mean, to keep you fully in the loop with your plumbing problems…
The heart of any home is the central heating system! Without this system, you are cold in the winter and replacing this important piece of equipment with a new boiler can become expensive.
