When should I replace my boiler?

When should I replace my boiler?

As a general rule of thumb, if your boiler is aged between 12 years and above, you should replace it. This is because boilers that are this old start to become less efficient and cost significantly more to run. There are also other non-age specific reasons you may need to get your boiler replaced:

Frequent breakdowns – If you find your boiler is causing you endless problems, you may need to replace it. You might find that you’re frequently contacting engineers, which can end up costing more than replacing the boiler itself.

Higher energy bills – Older boilers that aren’t functioning properly can end up costing you much more in energy bills.

Excess noise – Unusual humming, vibrating or banging could mean there’s a fault in your boiler system, which means it may be time to replace it.

Discoloured flame – Boiler flames are meant to burn blue. If it’s suddenly turned yellow, you may have a problem on your hands and will need to call a Gas Safe Engineer as soon as possible.

Odd smells – If there’s an odd smell when the boiler is operating you need to turn off your boiler and call the emergency gas line immediately on 0800 111 999 before contacting a Gas Safe Registered Engineer.. This is because it can be a sign of a gas leak which is incredibly dangerous.

Leaks – If your boiler is leaking water it could be a sign that something is wrong with your boiler and it may need replacing.

Frequently asked questions

Can’t find the answer you’re looking for? Reach out to our customer support team.

Can you replace a gas boiler with an electric one?

Yes you can.

As ever, we recommend getting a professional Gas Safe Accredited engineer to replace your gas boiler with an electric one as the plumbing system will need to be adapted or fitted to the new boiler safely.

When switching to an electric boiler from a gas boiler you also have more freedom with where you relocate your boiler because an electric boiler doesn’t have a flue.

Do I need to replace radiators with a new boiler?

You don’t have to change your radiators when replacing your boiler, but some people choose to change their radiators when they replace their boiler because it makes sense to change them at the same time rather than separately.

More modern radiators have the added benefit of running more efficiently to reduce your energy bills further. Also, older radiators build-up sludge over time, which further impacts their efficiency and ability to heat up.

Newer radiators can also be more stylish and you can opt to have them built with thermostatic radiator valves, which will let you control the temperature of each individual radiator.

Who is eligible for free boiler replacement?

If you are aged over 60 and receive pension credit, you may be able to get a free replacement boiler through the government’s ECO scheme.

Can a new boiler save me money on heating bills?

Absolutely. If your boiler is over 15 years’ old, it will probably have a G energy rating. Replacing your old boiler with a new, efficient combi boiler that’s rated A could save you between 20-35% on your bills.
